Taken

I am not a big Liam Neeson fan, but he is a very good actor. He does an extremely good job in this movie and makes his character extremely believable. This action movie delivers a good pace and storyline. Definitely worth checking out with a bucket of popcorn.

I think you will like this one very much if you are into action thriller movies. Cheers!

Netflix summary:

Working against the clock, her ex-spy father (Liam Neeson) must pull out all the stops to save her. But with his best years possibly behind him, the job may be more than he can handle. Famke Janssen also stars in this relentless action-thriller from director Pierre Morel.

Icarus

Another action flick that I enjoyed. It wasn't the best but it entertained me. I have seen numerous Dolph Lundgren movies so I have a good idea of what to expect. Surprisingly the quality of this movie was better than I thought it would be, maybe because Lundgren directed the movie too.

Watch it and enjoy. Cheers!

The Marine 2

I admit it. I am a sucker for these mindless action flicks. Just like my enjoyment for horror movies, I lower my expectations whenever I watch these violent movies. I don't expect a great plot and just hope to be entertained. This movie is 50/50 for me.

It delivers what it sets out to do. Again, this is not a great movie but for an action movie it was better than OK. The trailer is a good indicator of what you will get. Cheers!

Netflix summary:

No one at the opening of a posh island resort -- including Marine sniper Joe Linwood (Ted DiBiase Jr.) and his PR executive wife, Robin (Lara Cox) -- suspects that terrorists are among them ... until mayhem breaks loose, leaving Robin and the resort's owner hostage. Now, Joe must use every deadly maneuver in his arsenal to save his wife, end the tense standstill and leave no hostage behind. Roel Reiné directs this action-packed sequel.

Defendor

This movie Defendor with an O is actually fun to watch. I do like watching Woody Harrelson and have enjoyed the previous movies he has been in: 2012 and Zombieland.

I would recommend watching this movie with a bucket of popcorn. I think you will enjoy it like I did. Cheers!

Netflix summary:

Despite lacking any actual superpowers, Arthur Poppington (Woody Harrelson) transforms himself into costumed vigilante "Defendor." But danger beckons when the hero tries to protect young prostitute Kat (Kat Dennings) from an assailant. This clever drama -- writer-director Peter Stebbings's first feature -- also stars Sandra Oh as Arthur's court-appointed shrink and Elias Koteas as corrupt undercover cop Chuck Dooney.

Cast:Woody Harrelson, Kat Dennings, Elias Koteas, Sandra Oh, Lisa Ray, Michael Kelly, Charlotte Sullivan, Kristin Booth, Tatiana Maslany, Lyriq Bent

Armored

This movie is very straightforward and predictable. The trailer pretty much shows you what to expect. I have seen these 3 actors: Matt Dillon, Laurence Fishburne, and Jean Reno in many other films that I liked so I wanted to give this film a chance.

It is not a great movie but watchable. I wouldn't want to see it again, but I think if the trailer appeals to you then you might like the movie too.

Netflix Summary:

Armored truck guards Mike (Matt Dillon), Baines (Laurence Fishburne) and Quinn (Jean Reno) turn against one another after their plan to steal $10 million from their own company goes seriously haywire. A witness throws a wrench into their seemingly flawless strategy, so each man scrambles to save his own skin -- whatever the cost to the other conspirators. Nimród Antal directs and Columbus Short co-stars

Universal Soldier: Regeneration

This movie isn't as good as the original Universal Soldier that I enjoyed many years ago. Instead we have a much older Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren and mma fighter Andrei Arlovski in a futuristic action movie. Never the less, I enjoyed watching it and was entertained. I had much lower expectations watching this movie because I know both Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren have been putting out bad movies in recent years.

If you want to watch a sci fi movie and lower your expectations, then you might enjoy this one too. Cheers!

Netflix Summary:

When a Chechen Islamic extremist threatens the world with another nuclear disaster centered in Chernobyl, Ukraine, futuristic supersoldier Luc Deveraux (Jean-Claude Van Damme) leads a team to recapture the power plant and disarm the madman. But when the terrorist turns a clone of Deveraux's old sergeant (Dolph Lundgren) against him, the hero must first take out his old pal. John Hyams directs this installment in the Universal Soldier saga.

Rain Fall

This was a good action thriller movie. I was entertained from beginning to end. The storyline was interesting and the acting was good.

I think if the trailer intrigues you enough, then you will probably enjoy the movie like I did. Cheers!

Netflix Summary:

In this action-thriller based on Barry Eisler's novel of the same name, Kippei Shiina stars as John Rain, a Special Forces veteran who now specializes in assassinating government officials and other VIPs. But when a CIA official in Tokyo (Gary Oldman) tasks him with killing the daughter (Kyoko Hasegawa) of a recent target, Rain determines to protect the girl instead. Max Mannix directs this drama that also features Misa Shimizu.

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo aka Män Som Hatar Kvinnor; Millennium: Part 1: Men Who Hate Women

This foreign thriller movie is from a trilogy book adaptation. Unless you speak Swedish, you will have to watch it with subtitles. The movie was very good and entertaining from beginning to end.

If you want to watch a different but good foreign movie, then you will want to see this. Enjoy!

Netflix Summary:

Journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) and rebellious computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) team up to investigate the unsolved disappearance of wealthy Henrik Vanger's (Sven-Bertil Taube) teen niece (Ewa Fröling), only to uncover dark secrets about Vanger's powerful family. Niels Arden Oplev directs this Swedish thriller based on the first novel from Stieg Larsson's best-selling trilogy.

Law Abiding Citizen

I like Gerard Butler movies but don't care for Jamie Foxx. I decided to watch the movie hoping Foxx would not ruin it for me. Overall, the movie was very decent, but would have been better if someone else was cast in his roll like Denzel Washington.

This did have a Hollywood ending and would have been much better if they allowed Butler to succeed in bringing down the system. In the end, the director took the safe route which made it a predictable movie.

Worth watching once, but there are better movies out there that are much more entertaining.

Netflix Summary:

Traumatized by the atrocious murders of his wife and daughter -- and the flawed justice system that set the killers free -- Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) gives in to his rage and sets out on a course of vengeance. He soon takes on not only the prosecutor involved in the case, Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx), but also the city of Philadelphia. Director F. Gary Gray's bold crime thriller co-stars Viola Davis andMichael Gambon.

The Tournament

This action movie had some recognizable names and the plot was not too bad. However, the movie was completely predictable and the priest character was a little silly for my taste. The movie was too long and the execution was not good.

Again, the netflix community gave this glowing reviews and the trailer was done extremely well. This is again where the trailer is just so much better than the movie itself. You will feel cheated if you go in with high expectations because the movie doesn't deliver what you see in the trailer.

In the first 10 minutes you will know if you like this movie or not. I watched it all the way till the end. I wish I didn't though. I guess you have to watch a lot of bad movies to really appreciate the good ones.

Netflix Summary:

Every seven years, the world's deadliest hired guns converge on a random town to compete in the Tournament. The rules are simple: The last contestant standing receives $10 million and the title of the world's greatest assassin. Meanwhile, the competition is recorded on closed-circuit cameras and broadcast live to a secret room, where billionaires bet on the results. Ian Somerhalder, Kelly Hu and Robert Carlyle star in this killer thriller.

The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior

I have to watch these types of movies because I can't help myself. I knew it was going to be bad because it had an mma fighter in one of the lead roles. I prefer Randy Couture in the octagon than in movies.

That being said it wasn't a completely bad movie. It just wasn't good compared to the first Scorpion King. If there is nothing else to watch, then you might want to watch this streaming on netflix. When I watched it I was a little tired so the movie made me sleepy. I guess that is not a good sign for an action movie. Lol.

Netflix Summary:

This prequel to 2002's The Scorpion King tells the heroic tale of young Mathayus (Michael Copon) and his relentless quest for justice against an evil and powerful villain, King Sargon (Ultimate Fighting champ Randy Couture). Mathayus faces many heart-stopping tribulations during his adventurous, odds-defying trajectory toward his ultimate destiny as the formidable warrior king of an ancient desert empire.

Surrogates

I think you have to either be a comic book fan or a science fiction fan to really enjoy this movie. I am both a comic book and science fiction fan so this was going to entertain me even if it was half way decent.

There were elements of other sci fi movies that were blended in this film. It took away from its originality, but what do expect when it is based on a comic book.

I also do like most of Bruce Willis' action movies to boot. The movie was not great but it was not bad either. Get some popcorn and enjoy this sci fi action flick. Hope you like it.

Cheers!

Netflix Summary:

Based on Robert Venditti's graphic novel of the same name, director Jonathan Mostow's sci-fi thriller is set in a futuristic world in which humans hibernate at home while living their lives vicariously through robot surrogates. When a series of mysterious surrogate murders occurs, FBI agent Greer (Bruce Willis) ventures out into the world for the first time in years to investigate. Radha Mitchell and Ving Rhames co-star.

2012

I liked this movie and my wife hated it. I knew what this movie was about and I think I have a fascination with these end of the world type movies. This one was just like The Day After Tomorrow movie. A big calamity hits the world, very few live and we watch a few characters' journey to survive.

Yes, this is a corny predictable movie with a Hollywood ending. The big stars do live in the end and live happily ever after. I was entertained just enough. I am going to say you will have to lower your expectations and just enjoy the movie for what it is. Otherwise, this movie will be very long for you.

Netflix Summary:

When typhoons, earthquakes and other disasters suddenly threaten to destroy the world, Jackson (John Cusack), his estranged wife, Kate (Amanda Peet), and others surmise that the secret may lie in ancient Mayan prophecies that describe global calamity in the year 2012. Roland Emmerich co-writes and directs a star-studded ensemble cast that also includesThandie Newton, Oliver Platt, Woody Harrelson, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Danny Glover.

Avatar - 2010 Academy Award®: Best Picture nominee

I heard a lot about this movie so I was very skeptical that it would deliver based on all the positive press. I normally don't like what the main stream public likes, but this movie was excellent. I was very impressed with all the special effects they incorporated at every stage of the movie.

The acting was great, even though at times the characters were cartoonish. I am talking more about the military commander that comes across as a GI Joe wannabee. The actual avatars were pretty awesome. The storyline itself is predictable, although it did take a twist I didn't see. I didn't expect so many characters to die, too. That may have actually contributed to the overall story realism. Most Hollywood endings keep everyone alive for purposed of sequels.

Anyways, this is a great movie. Watch it and enjoy. Cheers!

Netflix Summary:

Disabled Marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) travels to planet Pandora to become an avatar, ingratiate himself with the natives and help Americans mine lucrative unobtainium. But he finds himself in an interstellar conflict after falling for Na'vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). James Cameron writes and directs this Golden Globe-winning CGI odyssey that has broken box office records. Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang co-star.

Inglourious Basterds - 2010 Academy Award®: Best Picture nominee

I think Quentin Tarantino makes good enjoyable movies like Kill Bill 1 & 2, and the Grindhouse Death Proof. There is almost a formula that he uses to make these movies fun and funny to watch. I think he incorporates it this movie too, but for some reason it falls a bit short.

He has a great cast, interesting plot, but somewhere in there I just felt it didn't deliver on the fun or humor. I can't really say why. Maybe I expected more because of his previous films and big actors. This movie was just ok to me. Not good or bad, but definitely watchable.

I am very surprised it got a few Oscar nods and would even be more surprised if it won best picture. There are just better nominated movies out there.

2010 Academy Award®: Best Director nominee: Quentin Tarantino
2010 Academy Award®: Best Picture nominee
2010 Academy Award®: Best Supporting Actor nominee: Christoph Waltz

The beginning of this movie was extremely slow, but it does build the German character up. Just too much time (15 - 20 minutes) was wasted in this scene. I do think it bothered me a little bit that they take a real figure (Hitler) in history and insert it in this storyline. You might like it or hate it. For me, I was a bit disappointed in a movie I really wanted to like.

Netflix Summary:

A Jewish cinema owner (Mélanie Laurent) in occupied Paris is forced to host a Nazi movie premiere, where a radical group of American Jewish soldiers called the Basterds, led by Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt), plans to roll out a score-settling scheme. The face-off is about to go down -- that's if Col. Hans Landa aka "The Jew Hunter" (Christoph Waltz, in a Golden Globe-winning role) doesn't get in the way. Quentin Tarantino directs this World War II-set spaghetti Western.

Dao huo xian aka Flashpoint

This is a Hong Kong action thriller movie. I don't like to watch the dubbed movies and prefer to watch the movies in their native language and read the subtitles.

This movie doesn't disappoint. However, it is a karate action flick so you can not set your expectations to high. That said you will enjoy car chases, good cop bad cop stuff, and even a light love story.

The movie at times does seem long, but in the end there is a great martial arts choreographed ending that seems quite realistic. Needless to say it is well done. You can pretty much grab some popcorn and not worry about the plot. It is good guys vs bad guys with a Hollywood ending.

Netflix Summary:

Action masters Wilson Yip and Donnie Yen deliver nonstop martial arts thrills in this tale of triad gang warfare in pre-handover Hong Kong. Reckless Detective Ma (Yen) threatens the careful work of his partner, Wilson (Louis Koo), who's finally infiltrated a notorious triad gang. As the operation begins to collapse, Ma enters the fray to go one-on-one against the triad leader (Collin Chou) before he takes over the streets.

The Hurt Locker

This movie was very straight forward in its plot with 3 main characters. They are soldiers who help detonate bombs and we watch their journey in their tour of duty. The special effects were good, the acting was great, and the environment created was believable. Again, another movie highly rated and praised by Netflix users that misses the mark.

There was one major problem with this movie. The director allowed it to fall into the "Blair With Project" Stupid camera work. You know the kind that makes you vomit worse than the scariest roller coaster ride. By the way, I can take any roller coaster but this movie loses the potential to be a good movie. Frankly, based on the netflix reviewers, I had high expectations for this movie. By the end of the movie, I was just happy it was over.

I realized that the elements of a successful movie were there, but on top of being a long movie with retarded camera work, there were questions about the realism. Presenting a true reality seemed to be a goal of the movie, and in that quest it fails. The actions of some of the soldiers were just not believable.

I say pass on this movie and avoid the motion sickness. You would be better off watching Saving Private Ryan or Platoon. Those are both great movies. This movie The Hurt Locker is in Oscar contention but that is a mystery.

The movie trailer looked great but the movie didn't live up to its expectations. The trailer is better than the movie.

Netflix Summary:

Kathryn Bigelow directs this gripping drama (nominated for three Golden Globes) following one of the U.S. Army's elite EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) teams operating in the ferocious war zone of Iraq. As the squad identifies and dismantles improvised explosive devices and other bombs, they must also contend with the frayed nerves and internal conflicts that arise from living in constant peril. Ralph Fiennes, David Morse, Guy Pearce, Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie star.

Gamer or Citizen Game

What happens when you put the star of Dexter's Michael C. Hall, the star of 300's Gerard Butler, and throw in a famous rap star Chris Bridges aka Ludacris? You get this futuristic gaming movie called Gamer. The question is does it succeed?

For me I had low expectations because the preview looked dumb. I could tell this would be a bad movie. However, it has people I like from Dexter and 300, so maybe there was the possibility it could be at least entertaining.

The technology was good, the storyline was fair, and it even had a happy Hollywood ending. Did I like it? No. Did I hate it? No. What I recommend it? No I wouldn't. I would think you would be better advised to watch Dexter season 1,2,3 or 4 or 300 if you really want to be entertained.

Netflix Summary:

It's 2034, and humans can control and kill each other in a large-scale online gaming world. But Kable (Gerard Butler), a wrongfully convicted soldier forced to join the violent competition, tries to free himself by taking out its evil architect, Ken (Michael C. Hall). While being controlled by a rich kid (Logan Lerman), Kable must also save his wife, Angie (Amber Valletta), who's trapped in her own avatar world.

Fifth Commandment

Yes, another karate action movie. What can I say, they are my weakness. Unfortunately, like I said in my last review, most action movies show the best parts in the trailers. Unlike the last movie, this movie was a disappointment.

The plot is dumb but not really necessary in these types of movies when you have good fight sequences. For me the best action scene was in the trailer. How sad! I hoped it would get better, but it didn't. The female lead in was annoying and reminded me of a fake Jennifer Lopez.

I may be influenced by the previous movie I saw Ninja Assassin, but these movies should be able to stand on their own. I like to watch these action movies over and over, but this will not be on the list. I can't recommend this one because it just misses the mark.

If you need a karate action fix, go for Ninja Assassin, Kill Bill 1 or 2, Crouching Tiger, Bloodsport, any Jet Li movie or the classic Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon.

Ninja Assassin

I love karate action movies and the trailer looked good. Unfortunately, most times they show all the good stuff in the previews. This particular movie did not. It actually looked good and the movie itself was a great action movie.

With most karate movies, there isn't really much of a plot. The action for me anyways determines whether it was worth my time or not. This particular movie had a decent plot and great effects in the action scenes. Not quite like Kill Bill but just as fun.

So grab some popcorn and get ready for action. This is one of those movies you can walk in on and start watching anytime. You just enjoy it for what it is.
